Should our leadership team tie quarterly bonuses directly to whether leaders hit their weekly Scorecard numbers, or does linking compensation to the Scorecard distort data integrity?
Do not tie compensation directly to weekly Scorecard numbers. The fastest way to destroy the utility of a Scorecard is to link individual financial incentives to weekly metrics. The moment money is on the line for hitting a weekly number, you incentivize team members to manipulate data, set low targets, and hide bad news.
The entire purpose of the Data Component in EOS is to give leadership an objective, unvarnished pulse of the business. You need leaders to enter accurate, red numbers without fear, so problems can be identified, discussed, and solved in the Level 10 Meeting before they turn into financial crises. When bonuses depend on a number staying green, employees will redefine categories, delay reporting cancellations, push bad work out the door, or sandbag performance.
Compensation and quarterly bonuses should be tied to overall company profitability and the completion of major strategic priorities, such as Rocks, evaluated alongside core values and overall seat performance.
A leader who reports a red Scorecard metric is doing their job by bringing critical operational reality to the surface early. Praise them for data transparency and use IDS to solve the underlying root cause. If you punish or reward leaders based on whether their weekly indicator is green, your Scorecard will quickly show flawless green performance while your business quietly bleeds cash.
