Sticking to the pure tools during your first year is vital because you cannot successfully customize a system you do not yet understand. When teams try to modify the Scorecard or alter the Level 10 Meeting™ agenda early on, they are almost always doing so to avoid the healthy discomfort of accountability. They want to dilute the simplicity of the tools because simplicity exposes operational weaknesses that complexity easily hides.

The EOS® tools have been refined across thousands of companies, and there is a consistent, proven way to do EOS® the right way. Every tool is designed to work in tandem with the others. If you change the meeting agenda, you weaken the IDS® process. If you muddy the Scorecard with complex formulas, you lose the ability to see weekly trends at a glance.

Commit to running the operating system pure for at least four full quarters. Let the tools do their work. If after a year of disciplined, pure execution you still find that a minor tweak is absolutely necessary, you can discuss it.

But in ninety-nine percent of cases, you will find that the pure tools were exactly what you needed, and the desire to customize was just resistance to holding yourselves accountable.
