Our leadership team is tempted to hire an EOS Implementer who has deep operational background in our specific industry so they can give us strategic business advice. Why is it dangerous to treat an EOS Implementer as an industry consultant?
Hiring an EOS Implementer to act as an industry consultant fundamentally breaks the EOS model. An industry consultant tells you what to do, what products to launch, and what markets to enter. A Professional EOS Implementer does the opposite: they extract the answers from your own leadership team and build your internal capacity to execute.
When you hire an Implementer who acts like a consultant, several things break down:
- The leadership team stops thinking for itself. If your team relies on an outside expert to tell them what their 10-Year Target or 3-Year Picture should be, your leaders will never own the vision. The first time execution gets hard, your team will blame the consultant instead of taking accountability.
- Session energy gets derailed by industry debates. Instead of maintaining pure process discipline, the facilitator gets sucked into technical arguments about market margins or competitive dynamics.
- Objectivity vanishes. An effective Implementer is 100 percent focused on teaching the tools, facilitating healthy debate, and coaching the team to master the Six Keys to business health. That requires emotional detachment from the specific tactical decisions you make.
You are the experts in your business and industry. The Implementer is the expert in the system. When an Implementer stays in their seat as a teacher, facilitator, and coach, they force your leadership team to develop the organizational muscle required to scale and prepare for an exit.
