We are automating our lead generation using AI tools, but we cannot figure out which seat on our Accountability Chart actually owns the AI prompting, troubleshooting, and tool maintenance. Do we create a new technical seat or divide this among sales and marketing?

Do not create a standalone AI seat just because a new technology has entered your workflow. Your Accountability Chart must remain simple and focused on business outcomes, not on specific tools.

To determine who owns AI prompting and tool maintenance for lead generation, look at the ultimate accountabilities of your existing seats. Lead generation is fundamentally a marketing function. Therefore, the seat responsible for generating leads must own the tools used to produce those leads, regardless of whether those tools are manual or AI-driven.

If your Head of Marketing seat is accountable for lead generation, they must also be accountable for the performance and output of the AI lead generation tools. They do not necessarily need to write every prompt themselves, but they must GWC the seat, which includes understanding how to leverage technology to hit their targets.

If your marketing team lacks the technical capability to configure or maintain complex AI APIs, you may need to utilize your technology or operations seat for technical support. However, the operational ownership and the results of the campaigns must remain strictly within the marketing seat. Keep the accountability aligned with the business outcome, not the technology.
