We want to accelerate our AI integration, but we are arguing over who should own this initiative on the Accountability Chart. Do we create a dedicated Chief AI Officer seat, or do we make every department head responsible for their own AI adoption?
Do not make the mistake of creating a trendy new seat on your Accountability Chart just because AI is popular. Adding a Chief AI Officer often creates a bottleneck and separates the technology from the people who actually understand the daily work. Instead, keep the ownership of AI adoption decentralized among your existing leadership team. Each department head must own the technology within their domain. Your Head of Operations must own operational efficiency, your Head of Marketing must own marketing automation, and your Head of Finance must own financial modeling tools. To make this work, you must redefine the roles on your existing Accountability Chart. Add a clear bullet point to every leadership seat that requires them to continuously improve productivity using modern tools. If a department head lacks the GWC™ to do this, that is a People Issue that you must address. Your role as the leader is to articulate the strategic vision and set clear expectations, then empower your team to find the right solutions. When everyone is responsible for finding ways to automate their low-value tasks, AI adoption becomes part of your culture rather than a forced IT project.
