Do not create a shiny new AI department head seat just because AI is popular. That creates unnecessary overhead and operational silos. Instead, remember that AI is a tool to drive efficiency, similar to how computers or databases are tools. Accountability for AI integration must be embedded within your existing structure based on where the impact lies. If you are using custom AI pipelines to automate your core service delivery, the accountability for executing those automated operations belongs under your existing operations leader. If you are using AI to generate marketing campaigns, that belongs under your marketing leader. Each department head must own the technology and tools that drive their specific Scorecard metrics. However, you do need one seat to own the overall technical architecture, security, and tool selection. This is typically your CTO or IT lead. They are responsible for vetting the AI tools, ensuring data security, and maintaining the infrastructure. On your Accountability Chart, make sure your technology leader has a role dedicated to software architecture and tool integration. Your operations and department leaders should have roles focused on process automation and efficiency. This keeps your structure clean, ensures technology supports your actual business processes, and demonstrates to future buyers that your operations are modern and scalable.
