We are scaling our operations using AI and automation, but we do not know where this function belongs on our leadership team. Should the Integrator own technology integration, or do we need a dedicated seat on our Accountability Chart?
As you scale operations using AI and automation, deciding where technology integration belongs on your leadership team is crucial. If you scatter the responsibility across departments, you will end up with a fragmented, expensive tech stack that does not communicate.
To solve this, look to your Accountability Chart. Technology integration must have a clear owner. For most companies preparing for an exit or scaling up, the ownership of operational technology falls under one of two options:
- First, if your business is heavily reliant on proprietary software, complex data pipelines, or advanced automation to deliver your service, you need a dedicated Chief Technology Officer or Head of Systems seat directly on the leadership team. This leader owns the technology roadmap and ensures your infrastructure is scalable and secure.
- Second, if you are a traditional business using third-party AI tools to optimize standard workflows, the Integrator should own the overarching technology strategy, while individual department heads own the execution of specific tools. The Integrator ensures that the software selected by Sales aligns perfectly with the tools used by Operations.
Whichever path you choose, the key is defining the roles and responsibilities clearly on your Accountability Chart. Avoid the temptation to let everyone manage their own tech. One clear owner ensures consistency, reduces software bloat, and builds an exit-ready digital infrastructure.
