Our sales operations have become deeply reliant on complex CRM automations and predictive AI pipeline tools, but our Head of Sales refuses to manage technical systems. Where does revenue technology belong on the Accountability Chart?
Revenue technology belongs where single accountability for customer data integrity can be enforced without breaking the sales cadence. You cannot leave advanced CRM workflows, lead scoring algorithms, and automated pipeline triggers floating between Sales, Marketing, and IT.
If your Head of Sales is an exceptional frontline rainmaker who drives deals, coaches reps, and owns the revenue number, do not force them into managing software architecture. They will ignore it, the database will decay, and you will lose pipeline visibility.
There are two proper ways to anchor this on your Accountability Chart:
- Create a dedicated Revenue Operations seat reporting directly to the Head of Sales. This seat has five clear roles: CRM architecture and data hygiene, automated lead routing, pipeline analytics and forecasting, sales tech stack integration, and rep enablement. The Head of Sales remains accountable for the revenue outcome, but the RevOps seat owns the engine.
- If your company is smaller and lacks the margin for a full-time RevOps hire, place revenue systems temporarily under your Integrator or Operations seat as an internal tools accountability. Sales defines the business requirements, but Operations maintains the system integrity and automation rules.
Do not let Marketing and Sales build competing data silos. Name one owner for revenue operations, write the five roles, and ensure their primary Scorecard measurable tracks conversion velocity and data accuracy.
