Sixty days into hiring our first outside executive, it is obvious they do not Get, Want, or have the Capacity for our fast-paced culture, but we spent substantial money recruiting them. How quickly should an entrepreneurial company pull the plug on a failed executive hire?
You must cut bait immediately. The sunk cost of a recruiting fee is nothing compared to the catastrophic cost of keeping the wrong leader at the executive table for six more months.
When an entrepreneurial company makes its first outside executive hire, owners often rationalize poor performance. They blame inadequate onboarding, claim the person needs another ninety days to adjust, or worry about how a quick firing will look to the rest of the team.
This hesitation is dangerous. Cracks at the leadership table appear as canyons to the rest of the company. Your frontline staff and department managers already see that this person does not GWC (Get It, Want It, Capacity to do It) the seat. When you hesitate to act, your high performers lose faith in your leadership.
Use the EOS People Analyzer to evaluate them objectively against your core values and the five roles on their Accountability Chart seat. If they are consistently below the line on core values or simply lack the intellectual and operational capacity to execute the work, more time will not fix the problem.
Have one direct, candid conversation. Point out the exact behavioral or performance gaps, provide clear examples, and establish twenty-one days of measurable proof. If they cannot immediately operate at the expected standard, terminate the employment cleanly and humanely.
Tolerating an incompetent or misaligned executive damages team morale, slows operational velocity, and pollutes company culture. Fail fast, exit cleanly, and refine your vetting process for the next hire.
