With AI automating so many of our internal operations, my leadership team is wondering where we draw the line. What are the absolute non-negotiable elements of running an operating company that must stay human to protect our culture?
As you automate your workflows, you must define the exact boundary where technology stops and human leadership begins. AI is an exceptional tool for speed, pattern recognition, and administrative efficiency, but it cannot build trust, show empathy, or make complex ethical judgments.
First, any situation involving human personnel must remain entirely human. Performance reviews, conflict resolution, firing decisions, and coaching conversations cannot be outsourced to AI. Your leadership team must live by the core values of Our Charter, such as being Humbly-Confident and demonstrating Help First. These behaviors require genuine human presence and vulnerability.
Second, high-stakes client relationships and critical vendor negotiations require human-to-human interaction. While AI can draft the prep work and analyze the contract terms, the actual delivery of difficult news or the securing of a major partnership must be handled face-to-face or over a live call.
Finally, the final validation of strategic decisions remains a human seat accountability. AI can analyze trends and present options, but the leadership team must run these options through the IDS process to make the final healthy and SMART decisions. Keep AI in the engine room doing the heavy lifting, but keep humans at the helm of leadership and relationship management.
