As we explore software automation, some of our department leaders want to use AI to track employee sentiment and grade performance. Which leadership and management responsibilities must strictly remain human?
Software should handle repetitive calculation, transcription, and administrative routing. It has no business judging human character, navigating emotional nuance, or resolving team conflict.
Never delegate culture evaluation or performance accountability to software. Tools that claim to score employee sentiment through chat messages or use algorithms to evaluate Core Values fit will poison team trust. Determining whether an employee shares your Core Values and passes GWC™ (Get it, Want it, and have the Capacity to do it) is the sole responsibility of the manager sitting in that Accountability Chart seat.
Similarly, your Level 10 Meeting™ must remain strictly human. Identifying, Discussing, and Solving (IDS®) operational root causes requires honest dialogue, personal vulnerability, and healthy debate. Language models can provide objective metrics or compile error reports ahead of time, but humans must debate priorities and own the resulting Rocks.
Finally, keep tough operational conversations human. Firing an employee, delivering critical performance feedback, negotiating a high-stakes vendor resolution, or consoling a major client during a service failure are non-delegable leadership duties. When you automate these moments, you signal cowardice and destroy operational morale.
