We are preparing our business for a sale in three years, but we are struggling to understand what sophisticated buyers actually value versus what we think is valuable. How do we shift our focus to build an asset they will pay a premium for?
Buyers do not pay for your past sweat equity, your years of hustle, or your personal vision of the future. They pay for transferable, predictable cash flow. When looking at your business, they want to see a machine that produces results without you turning the gears. To shift your focus, you must apply the EOS leadership skill of simplification to every corner of your operations.
Start by asking the focusing question from The ONE Thing: What is the single operational system we can systematize today that makes the rest of our processes easier or unnecessary to hand over? Buyers pay a premium for businesses that run on a clear operating system because it reduces their risk. They want to see that your leadership team uses a shared language, that your strategic goals are documented on your V/TO, and that your weekly Scorecard tracks activity-based leading indicators.
Focus your energy on proving predictability. If your revenue and operations rely on your unique personality, you have built a job, not an asset. Simplify your service offerings, document your core processes, and ensure your team is running Level 10 Meetings without you. When a buyer sees a streamlined, self-sustaining leadership team executing on defined Rocks, they see a highly valuable, low-risk acquisition.
