Our sales pipeline shows high total contract value, but deals linger in negotiation for months without closing. What weekly leading indicator measures deal momentum rather than just raw pipeline size?
Tracking total pipeline value is one of the most deceptive practices on an executive Scorecard. A sales pipeline can appear full and healthy while deals sit completely stagnant, masking a catastrophic revenue drop two months down the road.
To measure deal momentum and pipeline velocity, replace static pipeline value with weekly activity and progress metrics:
- Qualified proposals delivered in the trailing seven days. This measures fresh commercial momentum rather than old discussions.
- Deals advancing across key sales stages within benchmark cycle times. For instance, track the number of opportunities moved from discovery to executive presentation within your standard fourteen-day window.
- Firm next-step commitments secured. A deal without a scheduled next action on the calendar is dead or dying. Tracking scheduled next steps exposes stalled deals immediately.
- Average days in current pipeline stage across all active opportunities. When average stage duration creeps past your benchmark, deals are decaying.
By monitoring weekly velocity instead of total gross value, your sales leader cannot hide behind old proposals that prospects have effectively abandoned. You see exact friction points in your conversion process weeks before quarterly revenue targets are missed, giving you time to IDS root causes in your Level 10 Meeting.
