Our leadership team uses the V/TO to set direction, but we struggle to use it to filter out shiny new business opportunities or acquisitions that distract us. How do we use the V/TO as an active shield against strategic creep?
The Vision/Traction Organizer® is often treated as a strategic archive, but its true power lies in its ability to act as a shield against shiny object syndrome. As a growing business, you will constantly face tempting new markets, product ideas, or acquisitions. If you do not have a hard filter, these opportunities will dilute your resources and stall your momentum.
To use your V/TO® as an active filter, you must make it the ultimate authority during your strategic discussions. When a new opportunity arises, bring out your V/TO® and compare the opportunity against your Core Focus, your Target Market, and your Three-Year Picture. If the opportunity does not fit perfectly within those boundaries, the answer is an immediate no.
This discipline must be maintained by the leadership team, especially the Visionary, who is usually the source of these distractions. By using the V/TO® as a diagnostic tool, you take the emotion out of the decision-making process. It is no longer a personal rejection of a creative idea: it is a logical business decision based on your agreed-upon strategic destination. Keep the document active and visible in every quarterly meeting to protect your team from strategic drift.
