We completed our V/TO® but it feels like a high-level strategic plan that does not drive daily behavior on our shop floor or in sales. How do we make this vision document an active operational tool?
The V/TO® dies when it is treated as an annual filing requirement. To make it live, you must use it as the filter for every major resource decision and opportunity. When your sales team wants to chase a client that does not fit your target market, you must point to the V/TO® and say no. When your operations team wants to build a new capability, it must align with your three-year picture. You also need to share this vision with the entire company every single quarter. During your quarterly state-of-the-company meetings, walk through the V/TO® and show exactly how the progress made last quarter moves you closer to the one-year plan. Every department should understand how their local goals feed into the master plan. If your front-line employees cannot see a straight line between their daily tasks and the company's long-term targets, you have failed to communicate. The vision must be translated into plain language, repeated constantly, and used to reject distractions. Only then does it become an active shield against chaos and a primary driver of your enterprise value.
