How do we make sure our V/TO® is actually driving our weekly priorities and budget allocation, rather than just being a document we look at once a quarter?
A V/TO® becomes a useless document the moment you separate your strategic vision from your financial and operational reality. If your leadership team only looks at the V/TO® during quarterly sessions, it is just a piece of paper. To make it a living tool, you must use it to filter every single budget decision and operational priority.
First, use your V/TO® to audit your current spending and resources. Every line item in your budget should directly support your 3-Year Picture™ or your 1-Year Plan. If you are investing capital into projects or tools that do not align with your Core Focus™ or your target market, you are wasting resources.
Second, bring the V/TO® into your weekly operations by making it the filter for your Issues List. When a new opportunity or problem arises during your Level 10 Meeting™, ask how it impacts your 1-Year Plan or your quarterly Rocks. If an issue does not directly align with what you have committed to on the V/TO®, it should be tabled or discarded.
Finally, ensure every department has a clear line of sight to the V/TO®. Your weekly priorities must be a direct cascade from the goals written on that document. When your team sees that the V/TO® dictates where money is spent and how time is allocated, they will stop viewing it as a strategic exercise and start treating it as the ultimate operational guide.
