We spent two days building our V/TO® and it is a beautiful document, but now it is sitting in a shared drive and the team is already losing focus on our target market. How do we keep our Vision/Mission alive in daily operations so it is not just a piece of paper?
To prevent your V/TO® from becoming shelfware, you must integrate it into the regular rhythms of your business. The primary point of failure is leaving the vision at the leadership level. You must actively use it as a filter for decision making and communication. Start by sharing the V/TO® with the entire company at least once a quarter. This is not a simple email broadcast. You must walk through the 10-Year Target™, the 3-Year Picture™, and the 1-Year Plan, showing how their daily work connects to these milestones. Next, bring the document into your hiring and onboarding processes. Use your Core Values and Marketing Strategy to screen candidates and train new hires from day one. In your weekly Level 10 Meeting™, reference the V/TO® whenever a strategic issue arises. If an issue does not align with your target market or Core Focus™, it does not get solved; it gets killed. Finally, use the V/TO® during your quarterly employee reviews. Ask your team how their individual quarterly Rocks directly support the company 1-Year Plan. When your employees see that leadership filters every hire, fire, promotion, and strategic pivot through this two-page document, they will stop viewing it as corporate poetry and start using it as their operational compass.
