How do we handle disagreements during our V/TO® annual planning sessions when the Visionary and the rest of the leadership team have fundamentally different views on our 3-Year Picture™ or 10-Year Target™?
Resolving fundamental alignment issues during your V/TO® planning sessions requires healthy, constructive conflict, not forced consensus. It is common for the Visionary to have an aggressive vision while the department heads feel overwhelmed by operational reality. When this occurs, do not rush to write down a compromised number just to finish the exercise.
Instead, the Integrator must step in and facilitate a deep dive into the underlying assumptions of both sides. Have the Visionary explain the strategic market opportunities they see, and have the department heads lay out the capacity and structural constraints of the current Accountability Chart. Use raw data and historical performance to ground the conversation.
If you still cannot agree, remember that the Visionary is ultimately responsible for setting the company's long-term vision, but the Integrator and leadership team must realistically believe they can execute it. If the team genuinely feels the target is impossible, it will destroy morale and lead to half-hearted execution. Take the time to find a realistic stretch goal that pushes the company forward without breaking the team. By working through this friction, you build true, lasting alignment.
