I am the Visionary on our Accountability Chart, and I want to transition to a pure board seat two years before the sale to prove the business can run without me. What does my weekly routine actually look like once I vacate the daily operational seat?
Transitioning out of daily operations is the ultimate test of your business's transferability. To do this successfully, you must change your daily habits and respect the boundaries of the Accountability Chart.
Your new routine will no longer include attending the weekly Level 10 Meeting™ or reviewing the weekly Scorecard with the leadership team. Your daily interaction with the Integrator must shift to a scheduled, monthly or quarterly governance meeting.
Your weekly activities should focus on:
- High-level strategic relationships and industry trend analysis.
- Assisting with capital allocation decisions.
- Providing mentorship to the Integrator without overriding their decisions.
If you see an operational issue, you must resist the urge to jump in and solve it. Instead, trust your leadership team to use the IDS® process to resolve it. If you step in, you signal to your team and potential buyers that the business cannot survive without your daily involvement.
Vacating your daily seat early proves that your operating system is self-sustaining, which is exactly what premium buyers pay for. It turns your business from a job into an institutional asset.
