I am the Integrator and my Visionary is constantly changing our strategic direction based on the latest business books or conferences he attends, creating massive whiplash for the leadership team. How do we resolve this friction and protect our execution?
Friction between a Visionary and an Integrator is common, but when the Visionary constantly changes strategic direction, it paralyzes the organization. To stop this whiplash, you must establish clear operational boundaries and a disciplined process for new ideas.
First, implement a strict Same Page Meeting routine. The Visionary and Integrator must meet weekly or bi-weekly for an uninterrupted session to align on strategy, iron out differences, and build trust. This is where you debate new ideas before they are presented to the leadership team.
Second, use the V/TO to lock in your focus. Once your leadership team agrees on your annual plan and quarterly Rocks, those priorities are set in stone. The Visionary must understand that any new idea introduced mid-quarter is a distraction that threatens your current commitments.
Create an Ideas List on your V/TO. When the Visionary returns from a conference with a new strategic concept, capture it on the Ideas List. Do not implement it immediately. Instead, agree to review and prioritize all ideas during your next quarterly planning session.
This discipline allows the Visionary to remain creative without disrupting the daily execution of the business. It turns a potential source of friction into a structured process that protects team focus while ensuring the business continues to innovate over the long term.
