My Integrator and I are constantly locking horns over daily execution. I feel like he is blocking my growth initiatives, and he feels like I am constantly blowing up the Accountability Chart and distracting the team. How do we break this stalemate before it tears our leadership team apart?

Friction between a Visionary and an Integrator is incredibly common, but left unchecked, it will paralyze your entire leadership team. This friction usually happens because the boundaries between your seats are blurred, leading to broken trust and mixed signals to the rest of the company.

To break this stalemate, you must start by reviewing your Accountability Chart. The Visionary and the Integrator are two distinct seats with very different roles. The Visionary owns the big ideas, culture, and key relationships. The Integrator owns execution, leading the leadership team, and running the day-to-day business. If you as the Visionary are bypassing your Integrator to give tasks directly to team members, you are breaking the structure and undermining their authority.

You need to implement a weekly Same Page Meeting. This is a private, offline meeting where just the two of you use the IDS® tool to resolve issues. You must get 100 percent aligned on your vision and strategy before presenting a united front to the leadership team.

Consider using a written Charter to codify your working relationship. This Charter acts as a covenant of trust, outlining how you will resolve disputes and how decisions will be made. Respect the Integrator's veto power on operational execution, and trust them to filter your ideas. By respecting the structure of your Accountability Chart and staying in your respective seats, you will turn destructive friction into healthy, collaborative tension.
