I am the Visionary and my Integrator is running daily operations, but we are experiencing major friction because I keep spotting new market opportunities and wanting to pivot our strategic focus mid-quarter, which my Integrator says is destroying team morale and ruining our Rocks. Who gets the final say here?
This is the classic tension between the Visionary and Integrator. The short answer is that the Integrator has the final say on execution and the quarterly plan. Once your leadership team aligns on the V/TO and commits to the quarterly Rocks, those decisions are locked in for ninety days. As the Visionary, your job is to look to the future and generate ideas. However, throwing those ideas into the business mid-quarter creates chaos, destroys focus, and leaves your team feeling whipped. You must respect the boundary of the Integrator seat. When you get a new idea, do not share it with the team or force it into daily operations. Instead, capture it in your own notebook or a shared document. Bring these ideas to your same page meetings with your Integrator, which should happen weekly or bi-weekly. This allows you to vet the ideas together without disrupting the business. If an idea is truly a game-changer, hold it until your next quarterly benchmarking or strategic planning session. At that point, you and the leadership team can debate, discuss, and decide whether to prioritize it as a Rock for the next quarter. Respecting this discipline protects your relationship with your Integrator and keeps the business on track.
