My Visionary keeps bringing shiny new initiatives and prospective partnerships into the company mid-quarter, completely derailing our quarterly Rocks and driving the Integrator crazy. How do we stop this dynamic from breaking our leadership team without killing our entrepreneurial energy?
This tension is natural, but unchecked it paralyzes execution. The Visionary generates twenty ideas a week, and nineteen of them will bankrupt the company if pursued immediately. The Integrator is hardwired to execute, build stability, and protect the team from whiplash. When the Visionary bypasses the Integrator to drop spontaneous projects onto department heads, priorities fracture and Rocks fail.
To resolve this without suffocating the Visionary's genius, institute two non-negotiable disciplines. First, implement a weekly Same Page meeting between the Visionary and Integrator. This is a ninety-minute private pulse with its own Issues List. The Visionary brings every single new concept, opportunity, and partnership to this meeting instead of broadcasting it to the team.
Second, create a formal Idea Parking Lot inside the V/TO®. If an idea survives the Same Page discussion and both leaders agree it has merit, it stays on the parking lot until the next Quarterly Planning session. Mid-quarter execution belongs exclusively to the Integrator and the agreed-upon Rocks. The Visionary must accept that their ideas are not valid mandates simply because they thought of them in the shower.
If an idea represents a true existential emergency or a once-in-a-decade acquisition, the Integrator brings it to the Level 10 Meeting™ and leads the team to IDS® whether an existing Rock gets killed to accommodate it. Otherwise, discipline rules. The Integrator protects focus, and the Visionary learns that patience is what turns an idea into actual enterprise value.
