My Integrator and I are constantly arguing during our Leadership Team Level 10 Meetings. It is destroying the team dynamic and our directors are starting to take sides. How do we resolve this operational friction?
Public arguing between the Visionary and the Integrator is toxic. It signals to the rest of the leadership team that the organization is unstable. When your directors see this friction, they will start playing you against each other to get what they want, which completely derails execution.
The golden rule of the Visionary and Integrator relationship is that you must present a united front to the team. Any disagreements, debates, or philosophical differences must be resolved behind closed doors, never in front of your direct reports.
To fix this, you must institute a weekly Same Page Meeting. This is a dedicated, uninterrupted block of time, typically two to four hours, where just the two of you meet. Use this time to raise, discuss, and resolve all of your friction points. You must be completely open and honest, leveraging high vulnerability to build trust.
During this meeting, look at your Accountability Chart to clarify boundaries. If the argument is about an operational issue, the Integrator has the final decision. If the argument is about long-term vision or culture, the Visionary has the final say. If you cannot reach agreement in your Same Page Meeting, do not bring it to the Level 10 Meeting. Keep working on it privately, or bring in your EOS Implementer® to help you IDS the issue objectively. Your team needs to see alignment, not a civil war.
