Our Visionary and Integrator are constantly clashing over execution speed versus process discipline, and the tension is spilling into our Level 10 Meeting. How do we diagnose whether this is healthy friction or a broken relationship?

Healthy friction between a Visionary and an Integrator is essential. Without a Visionary pushing for explosive growth, new market offerings, and bold risks, a business stagnates. Without an Integrator demanding operational discipline, capacity limits, and systematic execution, a business implodes. Their tension is designed to create balance, not harmony.

However, when that tension bleeds into the leadership team and stalls decision-making, you have crossed from creative friction into dysfunction. To diagnose the breakdown, look at three diagnostic tests:

First, inspect the Same Page Meeting. Are the Visionary and Integrator meeting weekly or biweekly for a structured, private conversation to resolve misalignment before facing the team? If they are not running regular Same Page Meetings, they are fighting in front of the team.

Second, evaluate the V/TO® (Vision/Traction Organizer®). Do they completely agree on the Core Values, 10-Year Target, and 1-Year Plan? When philosophical alignment is absent, every tactical issue turns into a territorial war.

Third, apply GWC™ to both seats. Does the Visionary truly respect the Integrator seat, or are they constantly circumventing the Integrator by barking orders directly to department heads? Does the Integrator possess the Capacity to manage the business, or do they simply say no to every visionary idea out of fear?

If the Visionary cannot honor the Integrator authority on the Accountability Chart, or if the Integrator cannot handle the pace, the partnership cannot survive. Fix the communication rhythm first; if mutual respect and execution discipline do not return within 30 days, make the seat change.
