My Integrator and I have reached a point where our relationship feels incredibly strained. I feel like my Integrator is constantly shooting down my ideas and playing the role of a corporate bureaucrat, while my Integrator feels like they are just my cleanup crew. How do we resolve this standard Visionary and Integrator friction before it breaks our leadership team?
The friction between a Visionary and an Integrator is completely normal, but left unresolved, it will paralyze your business and destroy your enterprise value. This friction usually happens because you have not clearly defined the boundaries between your seats on the Accountability Chart.
To resolve this, you must schedule a recurring, structured meeting outside of your standard leadership meetings. We call this a Same Page Meeting®. This is a private, monthly check-in where just the two of you sit down to sync up. You must use this time to address any misalignments, clear the air, and work through your issues using the IDS® tool.
You must respect the division of labor. As the Visionary, your job is to generate big ideas, build key relationships, and look to the future. The Integrator's job is to run the day-to-day business, execute the plan, and lead, manage, and hold the team accountable. Once you agree on the strategic direction on your V/TO®, you must let your Integrator integrate. You cannot bypass them to direct the team, and they cannot lock you out of strategic planning. If you cannot get on the same page, your business cannot scale, and you will never be ready for a clean exit. Treat this relationship as the primary partnership that powers the entire EOS® engine.
