I am the Integrator and my Visionary is constantly bypassing me to assign random tasks directly to our department heads, which completely undermines my authority and confuses the team. Every time I bring this up, the Visionary says they are just trying to move fast. How do we stop this boundary-crossing and resolve this structural friction?

When a Visionary bypasses the Integrator to assign tasks directly to the team, it breaks the Accountability Chart and creates massive organizational confusion. This friction ruins the working relationship between the Visionary and Integrator and sends a signal to the team that they do not have to respect the established structure.

To fix this, you must establish clear rules of engagement. The Visionary and Integrator must be aligned on how communication flows. As a rule, the Visionary can brainstorm, ask questions, and build relationships with anyone in the company. However, the Visionary cannot assign work, change priorities, or give directives to anyone other than the Integrator.

If the Visionary has a brilliant new idea, they must bring it to the Integrator first. The Integrator is responsible for filtering those ideas, assessing the operational capacity of the team, and deciding how or if they fit into the current Rocks and V/TO®.

You must also implement weekly Same Page Meetings between the Visionary and Integrator. Use this time to IDS® any issues, align on priorities, and ensure there is no daylight between you. If the Visionary continues to bypass the structure, you must address it directly in your next meeting, because a business where the owner routinely breaks the chain of command will never scale and will be highly difficult to sell.
