During IDS, our Visionary and Integrator frequently hijack the conversation with deep philosophical disagreements about company strategy, leaving the rest of the leadership team sitting silently for half an hour. How do we keep executive leadership alignment from derailing the weekly operational pulse?
The Level 10 Meeting™ is built for tactical, weekly operational execution. It is designed to keep the business moving toward its quarterly Rocks and annual plan. It is not the venue for your Visionary and Integrator to debate existential strategy, re-litigate the V/TO®, or resolve their fundamental philosophical friction in front of an audience of department heads.
When the two top leaders monopolize IDS® with high-altitude debate, it paralyzes the leadership team. Department heads check out because they have no context or authority to settle the dispute, and critical operational fires get neglected.
The Integrator or a designated facilitator on the team must establish a hard threshold. If an issue exposes an unresolved vision, core values, or structural business model disagreement between the Visionary and Integrator, it must be flagged immediately as a Same Page issue.
The protocol is straightforward: cut the debate off after five minutes. Move the topic off the weekly Issues List and put it directly onto the agenda for the next Visionary and Integrator Same Page meeting. That is the dedicated, private weekly or bi-weekly session where those two seats hash out alignment without wasting the executive team's collective time.
Once the issue is transferred to the Same Page agenda, the leadership team returns immediately to the remaining operational priorities on the list. Protecting the meeting pulse means respecting the time of every person at the table. Do not allow executive-level misalignment to consume eighty percent of your weekly operational bandwidth.
