How do the Visionary and Integrator handle a disagreement when they are completely deadlocked on a major strategic decision?
When the Visionary and Integrator are deadlocked, the health of the entire leadership team is at risk. On the Accountability Chart, the Integrator has the ultimate authority for running the day-to-day business and resolving ties. However, the Visionary owns the long-term vision, creative direction, and culture of the company.
You cannot resolve a deadlock in front of your team during a Level 10 Meeting because it breaks the united front. To handle this, you must schedule a private same-page meeting. Use the Trust Creation Process to rebuild alignment.
Start by adopting an other-focused mindset, putting aside your personal ego to focus on what is best for the business. Engage and listen to each other's perspectives without interrupting. Frame the issue clearly: Is this a disagreement on the long-term vision, which the Visionary owns, or is it an execution disagreement, which the Integrator owns?
If it is execution, the Integrator must make the final call, and the Visionary must support it publicly. If it is a fundamental shift in the V/TO, you must work it out privately until you reach consensus. If you remain completely stuck, bring in your professional EOS Implementer to facilitate an objective IDS session. Never allow the leadership team to see a crack in your alignment, as it forces employees to take sides and paralyzes operations.
