My Integrator and I are constantly out of sync on major organizational shifts, and our leadership team is starting to feel the whiplash from our conflicting directions. We have a highly capable business, but we lack a unified operating agreement at the very top. How do we use the concept of Our Charter to get on the same page and establish a unified voice?
When the Visionary and Integrator are out of alignment, the entire organization suffers. Your leadership team will exploit this division, consciously or unconsciously, leading to confusion and execution delays. To fix this, you must establish Our Charter, a foundational covenant that defines how you will operate, communicate, and resolve disputes.
Your charter must rest on three essential pillars: Trust, Same Page, and Yes! to Strategy and Structure. To implement the Same Page pillar, you and your Integrator must meet weekly for a Same Page Meeting. This is non-negotiable. Use this time to align your thoughts, voice, and vision. If you have a disagreement, you must resolve it privately using the IDS process. You must never let your leadership team see a crack in your alignment.
The Trust pillar of your charter requires you to practice open and honest communication. You must be willing to admit your mistakes, share your anxieties, and lower your self-orientation. By agreeing to a shared operating agreement, you create a handshake covenant that guides all high-level decisions. When your leadership team sees that you and your Integrator speak with one voice, they will stop looking for workarounds and align behind your shared goals.
