Our Visionary keeps bringing shiny new opportunities and pivot ideas to our weekly meetings, which completely contradicts our V/TO® target. How do we use the V/TO® as an active filter to shut down off-strategy distractions without killing our entrepreneurial spirit?
To stop your V/TO® from becoming a dusty document, you must use it as a hard operational filter. Visionaries naturally generate ideas, but without a gatekeeper, those ideas derail execution. The solution is using the V/TO® to run every new opportunity through a strict three-step filter.
First, check the Core Focus. If the new idea does not align with your purpose and niche, it is dead on arrival. No discussion is needed.
Second, look at the Target Market and the Three-Year Picture. If the idea requires targeting a completely new buyer persona or demands resources that distract from your mid-term goals, it must be shelved.
Third, use the Issues List as a holding pen. Instead of debating the Visionary's idea immediately, push it to the long-term Issues List on your V/TO®. This allows the idea to cure. During your next quarterly session, the leadership team can look at it with cool heads.
This framework protects the entrepreneurial spirit. You are not saying no to the Visionary forever; you are saying not now. By enforcing these rules, your V/TO® ceases to be a strategic statement and becomes the practical fence that keeps your business focused on your most profitable, scaleable opportunities.
