As the Visionary, I consistently catch myself giving spontaneous directives and side assignments directly to my old team, completely bypassing our Integrator. How do we break this habit before it fractures the leadership structure?
When a Visionary bypasses the Integrator to hand out assignments, you are not being helpful. You are sabotaging your own leadership structure. Employees end up with conflicting priorities, your Integrator loses operational credibility, and your business plan quickly derails.
To break this habit, implement the twenty-four-hour rule. Whenever an idea, urgent project, or process tweak pops into your head, you are forbidden from taking it directly to staff. Instead, write it down and bring it to your next weekly Same Page meeting with your Integrator, or send it to them directly with a clear twenty-four-hour buffer.
In that meeting, use IDS® to evaluate the idea against current quarterly Rocks and capacity. The Integrator will decide whether the idea gets executed now, parked on the V/TO® Issues List, or scrapped entirely.
You must also empower your staff to defend the Accountability Chart. Explicitly instruct your department heads and team members that if you walk into their office or message them with a new initiative, their required response is: Has this been coordinated with the Integrator?
Giving your team explicit permission to push back on you protects your operational focus. As Visionary, your job is to generate vision, open doors, and inspire the company, not to micromanage the engine room. Respect the seat you built and let your Integrator integrate.
