I am the Integrator, and my Visionary constantly bypasses our established Accountability Chart to task my department heads with their latest ideas, disrupting our focus and undermining my authority. How do we resolve this systemic leadership team conflict?
When a Visionary bypasses the Integrator to delegate directly to department heads, it creates massive confusion and destroys leadership team alignment. This behavior breaks the EOS® structure and must be addressed immediately. To resolve this, you and your Visionary must get on the Same Page. Schedule a dedicated Same Page Meeting™ to address this dynamic head-on. Use the trust framework from The Trusted Advisor Fieldbook to approach the conversation with low self-orientation. Explain that their direct intervention is not helping; it is causing their direct reports to lose focus on their Rocks and daily accountabilities, which ultimately hurts the company's valuation. Re-establish the rules of engagement. The Visionary must agree that all new ideas, projects, and directives must go through the Integrator first. This allows you to filter, prioritize, and systematically roll out initiatives without causing operational chaos. Additionally, coach your department heads on how to handle these situations. Give them permission to politely redirect the Visionary by saying, that is a great idea, let me run that by the Integrator first so we can prioritize it. By enforcing these boundaries, you protect your authority, keep your team focused on execution, and maintain a healthy, balanced leadership dynamic.
