Our Visionary keeps bypassing our new Integrator to assign direct tasks to mid-level managers on the Accountability Chart, causing operational chaos. How do we put an end to this boundary crossing?
This is a classic Visionary behavior that completely undermines the Integrator and creates confusion throughout the entire organization. When a Visionary bypasses the Integrator, they disrupt the reporting lines on your Accountability Chart and waste valuable resources.
To stop this, you must enforce the rules of the Accountability Chart. The Integrator is responsible for running the day-to-day operations and managing the leadership team. The Visionary must respect this boundary.
First, schedule a same page meeting between the Visionary and Integrator. This is the place to address the boundary violations directly. Use the Trusted Advisor approach of vulnerability and personal connection. The Integrator must explain how the bypass behavior impacts team focus and execution.
Second, establish a clear protocol for new ideas. Create a V/TO parking lot or an ideas list. When the Visionary has a brilliant new idea or task, they must bring it to the Integrator, not to the team. The Integrator will then evaluate the idea and determine if and when it should be executed.
Third, use Thinking Time to reflect on this behavior. The Visionary should ask: How might I channel my creative energy through the Integrator so that I do not derail our operational focus? By respecting the structural boundaries, you protect your exit value and build a scalable business.
