During the IDS® portion of our Level 10 Meeting™, our Visionary constantly drifts from the tactical, short-term issue on the table to debate long-term strategy, the V/TO®, or our ten-year target. How do we keep the meeting focused on weekly traction without stifling the Visionary's entrepreneurial energy?
It is common for a Visionary to drift from short-term, tactical issues into long-term strategy during the Level 10 Meeting™. By nature, Visionaries operate in the future, and they get energized by big ideas. However, the weekly ninety-minute meeting is designed for short-term execution and weekly traction, not strategic planning. Allowing this macro-drift to continue destroys the operational discipline of the meeting. The Integrator must step up and facilitate with a firm hand. When the Visionary starts discussing ten-year targets or strategic V/TO® elements during a weekly IDS® session, the Integrator must immediately intervene. Use a simple, neutral phrase like: That is a great long-term strategic point, let us place it on the V/TO® Long-Term Issues List so we can address it at our next quarterly planning session. This approach respects the Visionary's input while protecting the integrity of the weekly agenda. The Integrator must then immediately steer the team back to the specific, short-term issue on the table. If the Visionary resists, the Integrator must address this behavior during their next weekly Same Page meeting. Remind the Visionary that the leadership team needs this weekly ninety-minute block to clear operational hurdles. If the team is forced to debate long-term vision every week, they will fail to execute the immediate To-Dos necessary to achieve that vision. Compartmentalizing strategic thoughts into the quarterly planning process is essential for maintaining operational focus.
