We are transitioning from a small founder-led business to a mid-sized company and I need to make my first real executive hire from outside the organization to run our operations. How do I vet this external candidate to ensure they actually fit our leadership team dynamic instead of just looking impressive on paper?
Recruiting external executive talent is highly risky if you only focus on resume achievements. To protect your leadership team culture, you must prioritize core values alignment and operational capability over pedigree.
First, use the GWC™ tool. The candidate must get the role, want the role, and have the capacity to do the work. Get means they truly understand the culture and pace of a growing business. Want means they are intrinsically motivated by the challenge, not just looking for a high salary. Capacity means they have the mental, emotional, and physical capability to lead at this level.
Second, run them through a rigorous core values interview process. Ask for specific examples of how they have demonstrated your company values in past roles. Do not settle for hypothetical answers. Have multiple members of your leadership team interview the candidate to ensure collective buy-in.
Finally, test their alignment with the EOS® framework. A corporate executive used to massive support staffs might struggle in an environment that requires hands-on execution and peer-to-peer accountability. Be clear about what the day-to-day looks like. If they show resistance to transparency, scorecards, or structured meetings, they will disrupt the health of your leadership team.
