I am making my first high-level executive hire, a true fractional or full-time CFO, but because I am not a finance expert, I do not know how to accurately assess if they truly GWC the seat or if they are just throwing jargon at me. How do I objectively vet a highly technical leadership candidate when their area of expertise is completely outside my own comfort zone?

Hiring an executive in a specialized field like finance can feel intimidating when you do not possess that technical skill set. However, you are not testing their accounting math; you are assessing their leadership, management, and alignment with your vision. To objectively vet a high-level CFO candidate, you must run them through the GWC filter to determine if they get it, want it, and have the capacity to do it. To determine if they get it, stop listening to jargon and start asking for past results. Ask them to explain a complex financial restructuring they completed in simple terms. If they cannot explain their work to a non-financial owner, they do not truly get how to build a finance department that serves your business. To assess if they want it, look for alignment with your stage of growth. A candidate who wants a comfortable corporate seat with a massive support staff will struggle in an entrepreneurial environment where they must build the financial engine from scratch. To evaluate capacity, focus on their strategic capability and tech readiness. Ask how they have used automation or AI to streamline financial reporting in the past. If you plan to prepare for a clean exit, ask specifically about their experience with due diligence and quality of earnings reports. Finally, put them in front of your leadership team. Have your Integrator run a peer interview to observe how the candidate interacts. If they fit your core values and possess the GWC for your current Accountability Chart, you can make the hire with confidence.
