We have a veteran employee who does not Want or have the Capacity to learn our new AI-driven workflow, but they have been with us for ten years and have strong Core Values alignment. How do we handle this GWC issue without ruining team morale?
This is one of the toughest challenges a business owner faces, but you must address it directly to maintain organizational health. When a long-term employee fits your Core Values but does not GWC™ their changing seat, you have a capacity issue.
First, be honest with yourself and the employee. If your company is evolving and their seat now requires managing AI-driven workflows to remain competitive, you cannot lower your standards. Doing so will breed resentment among high-performing team members who are carrying the load.
Use the GWC™ tool to evaluate the situation. Does this person truly Get the new expectations? Do they truly Want to learn the new technology, or are they secretly resisting? Do they have the actual Capacity, meaning the mental capability and time, to master the new tools?
If the answer to any of these is no, you must look at your Accountability Chart. Is there another seat in the company where this person can excel without needing to manage these specific technical workflows?
If a suitable seat exists where they GWC™ the responsibilities, move them. If no such seat exists, you must lovingly transition them out of the company. Keeping a person in a seat they cannot perform is unfair to them and damaging to your team.
