We have outsourced our core software development and AI integration to a third-party agency, and our internal team is blaming the agency for missed deadlines. How do we assign accountability for external vendor performance on our Accountability Chart?

You cannot put an external agency on your Accountability Chart. Your chart must represent internal accountability only. If your team is blaming an outside vendor for missed deadlines, you have a structural gap in your organization. Someone inside your company must own the relationship and be fully accountable for the vendor's deliverables.

To solve this, identify which internal seat should own the vendor relationship. Usually, this belongs in either the Head of Technology or Head of Operations seat. Add a specific role to that seat's definition on your Accountability Chart: Managing third-party development vendors and ensuring timely delivery of technical integration.

The person sitting in this seat must fully GWC™ this role. They must have the capacity to manage contracts, set clear expectations, and hold the agency's feet to the fire. If the agency misses a deadline, the internal seat holder is the one who is accountable to the leadership team, not the agency.

The seat holder must use your Level 10 Meetings™ to raise any vendor issues as IDS® items before they become critical bottlenecks. If the agency consistently fails to deliver, the internal seat holder is responsible for finding a solution, whether that means restructuring the contract, hiring a new agency, or building the capability in-house. Taking this approach eliminates finger-pointing and ensures your technology pipeline stays on track.
