We are preparing for our first facilitated leadership team offsite, but some of my executives think taking two full days away from operations is a waste of time. How do I frame the value of these offsites so the team shows up fully engaged instead of checking their emails?

If your executives think a two day offsite is a waste of time, they are trapped in a reactive, firefighting mindset. They are working entirely in the business instead of on it. You need to reset their expectations by helping them understand that strategic planning is not a distraction from real work; it is the real work.

Explain to your team that the daily grind prevents them from seeing structural issues and long term bottlenecks. The Quarterly and Annual sessions of our Meeting Pulse are designed to step out of the daily noise so you can align on vision, review your Core Values, set quarterly Rocks, and solve your biggest systemic issues.

To ensure engagement, set a strict ground rule: no phones, laptops, or email checking during the session. Make it clear that their departments must be self sufficient enough to run without them for 48 hours. If their teams cannot survive two days without constant supervision, it points to a deeper organizational issue that needs to be brought to the issues list.

Frame the offsite as a high yield investment. The alignment and clarity achieved during these two days will save hundreds of hours of miscommunication and wasted effort over the next 90 days. When they see that we use this time to permanently solve problems using IDS® rather than just talking about them, their skepticism will vanish.
