We are facing a sudden downturn in our primary market, and our leadership team is divided on whether we need to rewrite our entire V/TO® or just ignore it until the market stabilizes. How do we use the V/TO® to navigate this crisis without throwing out our long term vision?

When a market shifts, do not throw away your V/TO®. This is the exact moment the tool is designed to protect your business. You must separate your ten year target from your one year plan. Your core vision rarely changes, but your tactical execution must adapt. Start by reviewing your Core Focus. Does this market downturn change who you are as a company? Usually, the answer is no. Next, look at your Marketing Strategy. You may need to adjust your target market or your three uniques to solve different pain points for your customers. Do not rewrite your entire ten year target out of panic. Instead, use your quarterly meeting to adjust your one year plan and your quarterly Rocks. If your current revenue target is no longer realistic, change it. If your primary lead generation channel has dried up, create a Rock to build a new one. The V/TO® is not a monument carved in stone. It is a guardrail. If you ignore it during a crisis, your leadership team will start rowing in different directions, and you will lose traction. Keep the document open in every weekly Level 10 Meeting™ and use it as your strategic filter. If an opportunity or a crisis response does not align with your Core Focus, the answer is a hard no.
