We want to use our V/TO® as a filtering mechanism for new business opportunities so we do not bloat our valuation before an exit, but the team keeps bringing shiny objects to our quarterly meetings. How do we use the V/TO® as a hard filter to kill these distractions before they reach the issues list?
The V/TO is not a set of words you write down once and file away on a server. It is a filter designed to save you from your own worst impulses. When you are preparing for an eventual exit, shiny object syndrome is highly dangerous because it distracts your team and dilutes your core value proposition. To operationalize your V/TO, you must use it as an active gatekeeper during every quarterly planning session. Before any new idea, service line, or target market is allowed onto the Issues List or turned into a Rock, it must be put through the V/TO filter. Ask three direct questions. Does this idea fit within our Core Focus? Does it align with our 10-Year Target? Does it help us paint our 3-Year Picture? If the answer to any of these is no, the idea is dead. It does not get debated, it does not go on the issues list, and it does not get resources. This level of discipline forces your leadership team to protect the core business and keep operations clean. A buyer wants to acquire a focused machine with high margins, not a chaotic collection of opportunistic projects. By using the V/TO to ruthlessly kill distractions, you maintain a clean valuation and ensure your team is aligned on the exact goals that will drive your exit.
