We struggle to keep our long-term vision aligned because we are constantly tempted by new market opportunities and AI tools. How do we use the V/TO as a brutal filter to say no to good ideas that do not serve our core focus?

A V/TO is not a strategic document to be filed away in a digital folder. It is an active operational filter designed to protect your business from shiny object syndrome. When your leadership team is constantly tempted by new market opportunities, software platforms, or artificial intelligence tools, the V/TO is your shield against distraction. To make this tool active, establish a strict protocol for any new strategic idea. Before any major initiative is allowed on the quarterly Rocks list or receives budget approval, it must pass through the filters on page one of your V/TO. Ask three questions. First, does this idea align with our defined Core Values? Second, does it fit squarely within our Core Focus? Third, does it accelerate our progress toward our 10-Year Target? If the answer to any of these questions is no, the idea is immediately killed or tabled. If it passes all three but is not an urgent priority for the current quarter, it goes straight to the Long-Term Issues list on the V/TO. This keeps your current execution clean and prevents your team from getting distracted. By forcing every opportunity to fight its way through the V/TO, you protect your resources and ensure that your team is only working on things that actually move the needle.
