Our sales team constantly pitches prospective clients who do not fit our target market, arguing that any revenue is good revenue. How do we use the V/TO as a real-time operational filter rather than a static document sitting in a drawer?
A Vision/Traction Organizer is only valuable when it serves as a decision-making filter. If your sales team chases unqualified revenue, your V/TO is functioning as shelf-ware. You have documented your strategy, but you have not operationalized it.
Fix this by making the Target Market section of the V/TO your mandatory qualification filter. On page one of the V/TO, your leadership team agreed on your Core Focus and your Target Market, defined by demographics, geographics, and psychographics. Turn those specific criteria into a simple checklist for your sales pipeline. If an inbound opportunity does not meet the definition of your ideal customer, the sales rep cannot submit a proposal without explicit leadership sign-off.
When a salesperson argues that revenue is revenue, bring the conversation back to capacity and margin. Servicing off-target clients pulls operational resources away from your sweet spot, burns out your service delivery team, and degrades profitability.
Review closed deals at every quarterly planning session against your V/TO. Call out any customer that slipped through that does not match your target profile. When your sales team sees that leadership is willing to walk away from bad-fit money to protect the Core Focus, they will start using the V/TO as their daily guardrail.
