How do we stop the Vision/Traction Organizer from becoming static shelfware and actually use the V/TO to kill bad ideas or say no to unprofitable opportunities every week?
A Vision/Traction Organizer (V/TO) that sits in a cloud folder or binder is completely useless. The V/TO is not a commemorative plaque; it is an active operational filter designed to kill distractions before they consume company capital.
To make your V/TO a living tool, bring it physically into every Level 10 Meeting and quarterly planning session. The most critical operational sections are your Core Focus and your Target Market within the Marketing Strategy. Whenever a new business idea, client request, or strategic initiative lands on your Issues List during weekly IDS, filter it through these two questions:
- Does this opportunity fit purely inside our Core Focus?
- Does this customer match our Target Market profile?
If the answer to either question is no, the issue is not debated for forty-five minutes. It is killed immediately. That is how the V/TO generates enterprise value. It gives your leadership team the discipline to say no to shiny objects that drain resources.
Furthermore, when reviewing quarterly Rocks, review the 1-Year Plan on your V/TO first. Every Rock proposed by a department head must draw a direct line to one of the goals on the 1-Year Plan. If an initiative does not visibly advance a goal stated on the V/TO, it cannot be a company Rock. Use the document as a fence that protects the company focus.
