We just completed a Value Gap Assessment as part of our exit readiness preparation, and it highlighted high key-person dependency on our operations manager. How do we use our weekly Scorecard to actively measure and de-risk this operational dependency so we do not get dinged by a buyer during due diligence?
Key-person dependency is one of the most common risks flagged during a Value Gap Assessment because it represents a massive point of failure for a buyer. If your operations manager is the only person who knows how to deliver your service, your business is worth significantly less. To de-risk this seat using your weekly Scorecard, you must measure the standardization and delegation of their daily tasks. Do not track their personal output. Instead, track the percentage of operational processes documented and cross-trained. You can also measure the weekly volume of tasks completed by junior team members without the operations manager's intervention. Another powerful leading indicator is the resolution rate of tier-one operational issues by the frontline team. If your operations manager has to intervene in every minor issue, your scorecard will show a high intervention rate, pointing directly to a key-person bottleneck. By forcing these metrics onto your weekly Scorecard, you compel your operations manager to document tribal knowledge and train their team. This builds a self-sustaining operation that dramatically increases your enterprise value.
