Our leadership team is highly disciplined about updating our weekly Scorecard, but during our Level 10 Meeting we just stare at the numbers and move on. How do we train our team to use these numbers as a tool to actively identify and solve issues rather than just treating it as a weekly data entry chore?
If your leadership team is simply filling in the weekly Scorecard and moving on without discussion, you are missing the entire value of running on data. The Scorecard is not a status report. It is a diagnostic tool designed to trigger immediate problem-solving.
To break this habit, enforce a strict rule during your Level 10 Meeting™: any number that misses its target is immediately dropped down to the Issues List. There is absolutely no explaining, defending, or apologizing allowed during the scorecard review. You simply state the number, note that it is red, and move it to the bottom of the board.
Once you reach the IDS® portion of your meeting, the team can dig into the red numbers. This is where you analyze the data, identify the root cause of the miss, and agree on a plan to get the number back on track. When your team sees that a red number is not a personal failure but rather a tool to help them get support from the rest of the leadership team, they will stop treating the Scorecard like a chore and start using it as an operational compass.
