I am trying to step up into the Owner's Box to focus on strategic partnerships, but my leadership team still waits for my personal approval on every major operational decision. How do we use a formal Charter to give them the permission to run the company without me?
If your team is still running to you for every decision, you have not truly stepped into the Owner's Box. You are still acting as the operational bottleneck, which decreases the value of your business to potential buyers. A business that requires the owner's daily input is not a self-sustaining asset.
You must establish a formal Charter for your leadership team based on trust, the Same Page pillar, and structural accountability. Start by refining your Accountability Chart. Make sure every seat has five clear, measurable roles, and that your Integrator is fully empowered to run the day-to-day operations.
Once the structure is clear, you must change your behavior. When a leader comes to you for an approval, do not give them the answer. Ask them what their recommendation is, and direct them back to their Integrator. You must practice the discipline of letting go.
Use your weekly Level 10 Meeting™ to review performance, not to micromanage tasks. Let the team make decisions and even make mistakes within their defined areas of ownership. This builds their operational confidence and proves to future buyers that the leadership team can run and grow the company without you.
