I want to transition into the Owner's Box and stop running the weekly operations, but my leadership team is comfortable letting me make all the big structural decisions. How do we use our Accountability Chart to transition me out of active leadership seats?
Transitioning to the Owner's Box requires a fundamental shift in your relationship with the business. You must move from being the primary driver of daily execution to being an overseer of strategic governance. This process begins with your Accountability Chart. You must look at every seat you currently occupy and intentionally plan your exit from them. If you are sitting in the Integrator seat, you must hire or elevate a leader who fully GWCs that seat. If you are sitting in functional seats like sales or operations, those must be filled by qualified leaders who do not need your daily permission to execute. To make this transition successful, your leadership team must adopt a formal Charter. This Charter must outline the rules of engagement, establishing that the leadership team has the authority and accountability to run the business. You must resist the urge to step back in and solve operational problems when things get difficult. Instead, trust the team to use the IDS process to solve their own issues during their weekly Level 10 Meeting. Your role in the Owner's Box is to support the Integrator, monitor the monthly Scorecard, and protect the long-term vision, leaving the day-to-day execution entirely to the team you have built.
