We have filled out our V/TO® but we struggle to use it when new, shiny business opportunities pop up that tempt us to deviate from our plan. How do we use the V/TO® as a strict filtering mechanism for strategic decision-making?
The V/TO® is not a static business plan to be filed away. It is your ultimate filter for decision-making. When a shiny new opportunity arrives, whether it is a new product line, a potential acquisition, or a shift in target market, your leadership team must run it through the filter of your completed V/TO® before taking action.
Start with your Core Focus. Does this new opportunity align perfectly with your purpose, passion, or cause, and does it fit within your niche? If it does not, the conversation ends immediately. It does not matter how profitable the idea seems on the surface. If it passes the Core Focus test, move to your 10-Year Target. Will pursuing this opportunity accelerate your progress toward that long-term goal, or will it dilute your team's energy and resources?
Finally, look at your Marketing Strategy. Does this new idea target your exact demographic, geographic, and psychographic customer profile? If you are trying to sell a new service to an entirely new target market, you are fracturing your operational focus. By using the V/TO® as a rigid gatekeeper, you prevent the operational chaos that comes from chasing every passing trend. It gives your leadership team the confidence to say no to good opportunities so you can stay focused on executing your great ones.
